The Finnish Heritage Agency keeps a national list of Finland’s living cultural heritage. The list is part of UNESCO’s work to protect and preserve traditions around the world https://wiki.aineetonkulttuuriperinto.fi/.
I was part of a working group that applied to have spinning added to the list. And it did! September 10th I was at Helsinki Säätytalo to receive the diploma recognising spinning as an important part of Finnish craft traditions. d I was so happy to see this tradition and skill being recognised as a important tradition, as it is to me.
Spinning yarn by hand is an old skill that connects us to generations of craftspeople. I think it is important to keep these skills alive and share them with future generations.
